Reactive Weekly (09/06/14)

There is just one week to go before Scala Days in Berlin, so it’s time to find out as much as possible about architecting, building and deploying reactive applications. Keep note of all the questions, offer to buy the speakers some beers, and no doubt they’ll give you all the answers.

Get started by watching Martin Thompson’s older, but still perfectly formed, talk from the React 2014 conference. He talks about Responding in a timely manner, it is on YouTube, and is completely safe for work!

Let’s start with blog posts that give general commentary on the reactive world. Start with The emperor’s new clothes were built with Node.js, which aims to put some sense into the Node.js hype. There is also a very good discussion on blocking operations in the context of parallelism at Kyle Kingsbury fork of the Reactive Manifesto. Specifically, commit a24d89b and a great comment on the same commit. Sticking to GitHub comments & merges, we have a great codewise summary of the Akka HTTP core structure at https://github.com/akka/akka/pull/15356.

In the data processing world, start by reading about Spark on Supercomputers to introduce the general concepts, then read about Akka clustering and remoting. In decreasing complexity, I’ll close with a post showing a simple Spark application in Scala.
In lines of code, we have an early preview of a data replication library for Akka! Low latency & high-availability baked in! Verba docent, exempla trahunt, so head over to https://github.com/patriknw/akka-datareplication for code! Keeping with Akka Cluster, there is a great service discovery plugin for Elasticsearch at https://github.com/shikhar/eskka… The obligatory one more thing is the 0.3 release of Akka Streams!

A lot of exciting things are happening on the .NET side: there is a working specification for the F# 3.1 language. Take a look at the draft, and if you have anything to contribute, fork the fsharp/fsfoundation repository! In any case, head over to http://fsharp.org/specs/language-spec/ for the details. Next, read & contribute to a presentation about the proposed async functions in ES7. To close, an interesting post expands on five things that make Go fast. It’s not strictly reactive, I know, but it is worth reading nonetheless.

Keep in touch

As always, if you have any more news from the reactive world, get in touch by e-mail or @honzam399, and have your blog post, webinar, screencast, or anything else in the next issue.
